The U.S. Department of State announced plans to issue a limited edition of passports featuring an image of President Donald Trump on the inside of the cover, reports The Bulwark. The move is timed to the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence.
According to the information provided, the inside of the passport cover will feature a portrait of Trump against the text of the Declaration of Independence and the American flag, as well as his signature in gold. The back cover is planned to display an image of the American flag with the number “250,” symbolizing the country’s anniversary.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said these passports will have “individually designed styling and enhanced visual graphics” while retaining all standard security measures. They are expected to be available to U.S. citizens applying for a new passport at no additional charge starting July 4, 2026, at the Washington Passport Agency.
The decision to place the sitting president’s image on an official document has sparked debate among experts. Georgetown University professor and passport history researcher Edward Kolla noted that modern passports typically do not include images of sitting heads of state. He emphasized that U.S. passports are traditionally issued in the name of the Secretary of State, not the president.
This passport release is part of the broader “America250” initiative, which includes various events—such as holding a Grand Prix race on the National Mall and a UFC fight at the White House—aimed at celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
